Thai Fried Dumplings

Thai fried dumplings, or 'Khao Tieow,' are a delightful treat that brings a taste of Thailand right to your kitchen. Known for their crispy exterior and flavorful filling, these dumplings are perfect as snacks, appetizers, or even main dishes. Whether you enjoy them with a tangy dipping sauce or alone, they're sure to be a hit!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 lb ground pork or chicken
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped cabbage
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Dumpling Dough:

In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and water until you form a smooth dough. Knead for a few minutes until elastic. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for about 30 minutes.

2. Make the Filling:

In a skillet, heat a tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook until fragrant. Then, add the ground pork or chicken, cooking until it is no longer pink. Stir in the chopped cabbage, green onions, soy sauce, oyster sauce, salt, and pepper. Cook for another 3-4 minutes, then remove from heat and let it cool.

3. Assemble the Dumplings:

After resting the dough, divide it into small balls, about the size of a golf ball. Roll each ball out into a thin round disc. Place a spoonful of the meat filling in the center of each disc. Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape, pressing the edges together to seal. You can crimp the edges for a more decorative touch.

4. Fry the Dumplings:

Heat oil in a large frying pan or wok over medium-high heat. Carefully add the dumplings, frying them in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry until they are golden brown and crispy on both sides, about 3-4 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to remove the dumplings and drain them on paper towels.

5. Serve and Enjoy:

Thai fried dumplings can be served hot with a side of sweet chili sauce or soy sauce for dipping. They pair beautifully with a fresh cucumber salad or jasmine rice. Enjoying these delicious bites with family and friends is guaranteed to bring joy to any gathering!

Tips for the Perfect Dumpling:

  • For a lighter option, you can steam the dumplings instead of frying them.
  • Experiment with different fillings, such as vegetables, shrimp, or tofu, to suit your taste.
  • Freeze any leftover dumplings. Just ensure they are well sealed and place them in an airtight container.

With these simple steps, you’ll be able to whip up authentic Thai fried dumplings that will impress everyone at your table. Enjoy this delicious Thai street food classic any time of the year!
