Ingredients

To make Thai-inspired cinnamon rolls, you'll need the following ingredients:

  • For the dough:
    • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
    • ¼ cup granulated sugar
    • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) instant yeast
    • ½ tsp salt
    • 1 cup whole milk (warm)
    • ½ cup unsalted butter (melted)
    • 2 large eggs
  • For the filling:
    • ¾ cup brown sugar
    • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
    • 1 tsp ground ginger
    • ¼ tsp ground cardamom
    • ¼ cup unsalted butter (softened)
    • 2 tbsp shredded coconut (optional)
  • For the glaze:
    • 1 cup powdered sugar
    • 2 tbsp coconut milk
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let this mixture sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy, indicating that the yeast is activated.

Next, add the melted butter and eggs to the yeast mixture. Mix well before gradually adding the flour and salt. Combine until a dough forms and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.

Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.

Step 2: Make the Filling

In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, and softened butter. If you're using shredded coconut, add it into the mixture for added texture and flavor.

Step 3: Assemble the Rolls

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out onto a floured surface into a rectangle about ¼ inch thick. Spread the filling evenly over the dough. Carefully roll the dough into a log, starting from the longer edge.

Cut the log into 12 equal pieces and place the rolls in a greased baking dish. Cover the dish with a cloth and let the rolls rise for another 30 minutes.

Step 4: Bake

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the cinnamon rolls for 20-25 minutes or until they are golden brown. Once baked, remove them from the oven and let them cool slightly.

Step 5: Add the Glaze

While the rolls are cooling, prepare the glaze by mixing powdered sugar, coconut milk, and vanilla extract in a bowl until smooth. Drizzle the glaze over the rolls while they are still warm for a delicious finish.

Enjoy Your Thai-Inspired Cinnamon Rolls!

Your Thai-inspired cinnamon rolls are now ready to be enjoyed. The fusion of traditional cinnamon roll flavors with Thailand's aromatic spices brings a fresh perspective to a beloved classic. Serve them warm for breakfast or as a sweet treat any time of the day.
