How to Make a Traditional Thai Vegetarian Pad Thai

Pad Thai is a beloved classic in Thai cuisine, celebrated for its combination of flavors, textures, and nutritional balance. This traditional vegetarian version of Pad Thai is just as delicious and satisfying as its meat counterpart. Follow these easy steps to create a delightful dish that can be enjoyed by everyone.

Ingredients:

  • 8 oz rice noodles
  • 2 tablespoons tamarind paste
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 eggs (omit for vegan option)
  • 1 cup bean sprouts
  • 1 cup chopped firm tofu
  • 1/2 cup sliced green onions
  • 1/4 cup crushed peanuts
  • Lime wedges for serving
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Noodles

Begin by soaking the rice noodles in warm water for about 30 minutes or until they are soft but still firm. Drain and set aside.

Step 2: Create the Sauce

In a small bowl, combine the tamarind paste, soy sauce, and sugar. Mix well until the sugar dissolves completely. This sauce will be the heart of your Pad Thai.

Step 3: Cook the Tofu

In a large pan or wok, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the firm tofu cubes and fry until golden brown on all sides. Remove the tofu from the pan and set aside.

Step 4: Stir-fry Ingredients

In the same pan, add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 30 seconds. If using eggs, crack them into the pan and stir until cooked. Next, add the drained rice noodles and stir well to combine. Pour in the sauce and mix thoroughly to ensure the noodles are nicely coated.

Step 5: Add Vegetables and Tofu

Add the crispy tofu, bean sprouts, and sliced green onions to the noodles. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until everything is heated through. Adjust seasoning if necessary.

Step 6: Serve

Transfer your traditional Thai vegetarian Pad Thai to serving plates. Top with crushed peanuts, fresh cilantro, and a squeeze of lime juice for added flavor. Enjoy your delicious homemade meal!

Tips for the Perfect Pad Thai:

  • Drain the noodles well after soaking to prevent them from becoming mushy when cooking.
  • Feel free to customize your Pad Thai with additional vegetables such as bell peppers, carrots, or zucchini.
  • If you prefer a spicier kick, add chopped red chilies or a dash of sriracha to the sauce.

This traditional Thai vegetarian Pad Thai is perfect for a quick weeknight dinner or as a crowd-pleaser at gatherings. It’s not only hearty and fulfilling but also bursting with flavor, ensuring it satisfies vegetarians and meat-eaters alike.
