How to Make Thai Chive Pancakes

Thai chive pancakes, or "Kuay Teow Kun Nam," are a delicious and savory treat that combines the flavors of fresh chives with a crispy exterior. They're perfect as an appetizer, snack, or even a light meal. Making Thai chive pancakes at home is easier than you might think. Follow this simple recipe to create these delightful pancakes!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 bunch of fresh chives, chopped
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Optional: sesame oil for added flavor

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Batter

In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Gradually add water while stirring to avoid lumps. Mix until you achieve a smooth batter. The consistency should be pourable but thick enough to hold its shape. If desired, you can add a teaspoon of sesame oil for extra flavor.

Step 2: Add the Chives

Once the batter is smooth, fold in the chopped chives. Make sure the chives are evenly distributed throughout the batter for a balanced taste and texture.

Step 3: Heat the Pan

Place a non-stick skillet or frying pan over medium heat and add a generous amount of vegetable oil. Allow the oil to heat up; you can test it by dropping a small amount of batter into the pan. If it sizzles, the oil is ready.

Step 4: Cook the Pancakes

Pour a ladleful of batter into the hot oil, spreading it out gently into a circular shape. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on one side until the edges begin to crisp and the bottom is golden brown. Flip the pancake carefully and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes on the other side.

Step 5: Drain and Serve

Once both sides are golden and crispy, remove the pancake from the pan and place it on a paper towel to drain any excess oil. Repeat the process with the remaining batter, adding more oil to the pan as needed. Serve the pancakes warm with a dipping sauce of your choice, such as soy sauce mixed with chili flakes or a sweet and sour sauce.

Tips for Perfect Thai Chive Pancakes

  • Ensure your chives are fresh for the best flavor.
  • Adjust the thickness of the batter by either adding more water or flour based on your preference.
  • Experiment with additional fillings, such as mushrooms or minced shrimp, for variety.

Enjoy making and sharing these delicious Thai chive pancakes with family and friends. They are not only satisfying to eat but also offer a fantastic way to experience Thai cuisine at home!
